'Will end child labour in my area' - Deccan Herald

Ashpreet Sethi New Delhi, Apr 4, 2012, DHNS :

?Congress’ Taruna Kataria will contest the forthcoming municipal elections from Amar Colony, Lajpat Nagar ward, for the first time and wants to root out child labour from dhabas and hotels in Garhi Village, a semi urban area in the locality.

Congress’ Taruna Kataria will contest the forthcoming municipal elections from Amar Colony for the first time. “It will not be an easy task because I know that these children have been trafficked from other cities. We will not only rescue them, but try to get their admissions done in nearby schools. Also, we need to make the village better. If you enter that area, you will start crying,” said Kataria. She was born in Lajpat Nagar lV and got married in the same area. She has been actively involved in social work and helped many get ration cards and election cards.

Although other women candidates contesting from Amar Colony have promised to enhance living conditions in Garhi, but residents alleged they have been hearing this for nine years.

Savita Gupta, sitting councillor and BJP Candidate from Amar Colony, has a different agenda. Gupta, who has recently won the best councillor award and is chairing the MCD Garden Committee, claimed that she will push the government to build new schools, air-conditioned community centre and library for the elderly.

“I would like to make this clear that water and electricity issues are supposed to be dealt with by the MLA and not the councillor. So I will not make false promises. I would like to request people to say no to plastic bags and plant more trees. We must learn how to keep our environment clean,” she said.

She added immediate attention needs to be given to areas such as sanitation, maintenance of parks, street lights, drainage system and mentioned that citizen service is her priority.

Amar Colony residents planned to support the sitting councillor as they are happy with her work.

“We have never been disappointed with her work, but she has tough competition this year. She has been born and brought up in this area and everybody knows her well for her active participation in social work,” said Baldev Raj, owner of a medicine shop in Amar Colony.

However, Garhi residents fear that parties will not pay attention to their issues post-campaign. “We do not want any party to win because they never return to the village after winning. There is only one genuine independent candidate named Preeti who can win if we unite,” said a shopkeeper.
